I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name forever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty – and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works – and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

 

What a beautiful psalm of praise! Throughout the book of Psalms, David pivoted between psalms of praise and songs of lament. He faced many trials in his life. His father, Saul, sent him into hiding because he tried to kill him. As a king, he continued to fight enemies all around him. Eventually he was betrayed by Joab, the head of his armies and eventually even by Absalom, his oldest son. David was not a perfect man either, and did many things that did not please God. However, God had a plan for David and his descendants. David repented of his sins and never lost faith in God. He always wanted to get closer to God, and this psalm demonstrates his love for Him. God was slow to anger and continued to love David through everything.

This hymn of praise should be read by each of us every day. Often, we need reminders that God is worthy of praise, every day and throughout the generations. It is our duty and privilege to read about, think about and tell others of what God has done for us. It is our duty to teach our children the stories and teach them this reverence for the majesty of our Lord. I know that I often feel defeated when I fall short of what God expects of me. It comforting to remember that He is slow to anger and rich in love. Praise God!

Dear Lord, you are an awesome God who deserves all our praise, every day. Thank you for your unlimited grace and mercy, for we know we are sinners and only you can save us. All glory to you! Amen.
