1 What if the Lord had not been on our side?
Let all Israel repeat:
2 What if the Lord had not been on our side
when people attacked us?
3 They would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger.
4 The waters would have engulfed us;
a torrent would have overwhelmed us.
5 Yes, the raging waters of their fury
would have overwhelmed our very lives.
6 Praise the Lord,
who did not let their teeth tear us apart!
7 We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap.
The trap is broken, and we are free!
8 Our help is from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
In this psalm, David describes the troubles faced as they ascended towards Jerusalem. We can liken this to our daily lives…Do we have troubles that swallow or overwhelm us? Sometimes it may feel like a rushing river of water sweeping over us with feelings of depression. Verse 6 turns that around for us as David begins to praise and bless God. He describes God’s deliverance at our time of need as a bird escaping from the trap. How frail and feeble we are, like a bird, but our strength is our trust in God, the creator of all! Look back at times in your life when you were rescued, and praise and trust God!
Heavenly Father, as we make our way, our pilgrimage in this life, we thank You for Your divine guidance and protection over us. Deliver us from evil. Amen!
