1 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2 to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it, not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 5 In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Many of us have been taught that strength means proving ourselves, climbing higher, or making sure our voices are heard. Peter offers a very different picture. He encourages us to serve willingly rather than reluctantly, not for personal gain but out of genuine care for others. Then he broadens that invitation, urging all believers to "clothe yourselves with humility." The world often sees humility as weakness, but Jesus showed us that true strength is found in serving, listening, and loving others well. I find it comforting that God doesn't ask me to impress Him or anyone else. He simply invites me to walk humbly, trusting that He is the One who lifts us up in His perfect time.
Gracious God, teach me to follow the humble way of Christ and to serve others with joy and love. Amen.
