36 But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, not the Son, but only the Father. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.
As we enter the season of Advent this message is particularly timely as we anticipate the coming of the celebration of the birth of Jesus. We are such planners of events and often are distracted by all manner of preparations and scheduling, especially at this busy time of the year.
This passage causes us to pause and remember that just as in Noah’s time, people were oblivious to the impending flood, that we need to be in a state of readiness and expectation for the coming of Christ.
What does that mean to be ready for the coming? Does it mean we need to anticipate the time and the place as we have heard some herald over the years? Or does it mean to live our daily lives in following in the steps of Christ. He has given us the perfect example through the love, sacrifice and great grace he has bestowed on each of us. As we enter this time of Advent to celebrate with our family and friends let’s do so with daily devotion and prayers of thanksgiving and expectation.
Dear Father, even though we do not know the time or the place when we will encounter Jesus, we pray that we can witness faithfully in our daily living to His ultimate purposes of love, peace and joy.
