Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? / Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who set its measurements — if you know? / Or who stretched the measuring line over it? Onto what were its bases sunk, / Or who laid its cornerstone.
My husband and I love to play mini golf. We try to find a course every time we travel to a new place. We once visited one run by a widow who told us all about her husband, the engineer, who designed the course we were about to play. Before that, it had never occurred to me that an engineer might be what was needed to design a mini golf course. I guess I just figured it was all about the fun obstacles, but I now know that it would be quite frustrating to maneuver around the blade of the moving windmill just to have your ball stall before it gets to the cup because it wasn’t designed properly.
As a child I just thought of God as speaking everything into existence. After all, He’s God! When God responds to Job in the passage above, He talks about planning and measuring. The workings of our universe are so complex! Of course, I should have realized that God didn’t just speak it from His power but also from a place of supreme intelligence and skill.
Lord God Almighty, give us today a fresh appreciation for all You have planned and provided. Amen.
