1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
English is a difficult language. We have words that look like they would sound alike but do not (comb and tomb) and have words that do not sound like they are spelled. My most frustrating part of the English language however is our limitation of words for the same thing. In Greek they have multiple words for love, each defining a unique relationship around that word. The same can be said for the word life.
In Greek you have bios for physical life, and you have zoe for spiritual life. In this reading from John, the writer uses zoe each time you read the word life. At creation, we have Christ, the Word, bringing a spiritual essence into all that is made. When man and woman are woven into the biological world, they are also given something more beyond simple existence. The Word infuses us with a spark of divinity, this light which is the spiritual essence of God. As a result of this imbuing of God into us, we find ourselves pulled towards God. No matter what we do to deny our spirituality or seek to defy God, we are pulled back to God. This bond cannot be extinguished, even in the darkness of a tomb on a Good Friday thousands of years ago.
Let God’s pull manifest in your life. Release your control for God’s direction. Maybe in doing this, you can find true purpose and peace.
Light of the World, shine your light in my life so that I can in turn reflect it onto all those around me. Amen.
