1 When David’s time to die drew near, he charged his son Solomon, saying: 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous, 3 and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn. 4 Then the Lord will establish his word that he spoke concerning me: ‘If your heirs take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a successor on the throne of Israel.’

 

My financial advisor (and others) has shared with me that we are living in the age of the greatest transfer of wealth that is being passed on between generations that the world has ever seen. Further, no knows exactly what will happen when the transfer of wealth is complete. Will those who inherit wealth preserve it? Spend it? No one knows exactly, but studies show that wealth being transferred between the generations usually lasts two generations so that by the third generation, the wealth is often depleted.

This text we have today is a “transfer of wealth” text from King David to his son, Solomon, before David’s death. David’s final words to his son is, “Be Strong. Be courage. And keep the charge of the Lord.”

There is a happy ending to this story as the nation of Israel flourished under the reign of Solomon. Yet, after his reign things didn’t work out so well. There were captivity and chaos that ensued.

What can we do to preserve wealth between the generations? Make sure to instruct our offspring to be wise stewards of the gifts and wealth that we pass along at the end of our lives. So that what took a lifetime to build is preserved for future generations.

Let us Pray: Dear Lord, as David past on the mantle of leadership and wealth to his son, Solomon, so to may be a good steward of all that you have placed into my hands. Bless me to be a blessing for future generations that follow me. In the name of your son, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
