But I myself also am persuaded concerning you, my brothers, that you yourselves also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
The Church in Rome had only existed about 10-15 years when Paul (around the age of 50) wrote a letter to them containing this verse. That may sound like a long time (especially if you’re very young) but remember, this was one of the first churches. There was no prior tradition upon which to draw. Early Christians came from a variety of backgrounds, from pagan to Jewish. There were a lot of things they were working out during those years in order for the Church to grow.
Visits and letters from the Apostle Paul must have been eagerly anticipated. Being just a man, Paul could only do so much. He was supporting numerous churches and was frequently unavailable due to incarceration or other hindrances.
I love that he shares with the saints in the Church in Rome that he knows they have what they need already and are able to encourage and support one another.
Because Jesus promised in John 16:13 that the Holy Spirit within each of us believers will lead us in the way of truth, we each have within us the goodness, knowledge, and ability to gently reprove one another along the way. Let’s be confident in all that is provided to us by His Spirit.
Lord, help me to faithfully follow Your leading, serving You well in all to which You have called me. Amen.
