1 He has founded his city on the holy mountain. 2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are said of you, city of God:[a] 4 “I will record Rahab[b] and Babylon among those who acknowledge me— Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush[c]— and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”[d] 5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High himself will establish her.” 6 The Lord will write in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.”
7 As they make music they will sing, “All my fountains are in you.”
The writer of Psalm 87 repeatedly makes references to Zion, the city that God loves. The writer emphasizes the import of those born in Zion (Jerusalem). Being recognized by the countries of Babylon and Tye, among others. It reinforces the importance of Jerusalem to the people of that time.
Jerusalem, the “Holy City” and the Capitol of Israel is regarded as the Holiest of Jewish, Christian, and Muslem faiths. It is a city of many facets. We were privileged to visit Jerusalem in the mid-Eighties. Seeing the western wall; and staying within the original walls of Jerusalem was indeed a humbling experience.
Thinking about the situation in our world today, we need to think of God’s “Holy City” and those of many faiths and beliefs living there who manage to coexist. May we see others as “God’s child” regardless of their color, creed or lifestyle.
Lord, we give thanks to you for being our loving creator & father. May we show your love to those around us. Period. Amen
