The scripture for today is Romans 13:1-7.
Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Talk about a fire storm of a topic in this day and politically charged age.
I was part of a conversation with 14 individuals and most had backgrounds from different countries. The group was discussing life in a social atmosphere and the topic of the U.S. Government came up.
Almost all of the group agreed that they didn’t like the U.S. government. But upon further review they said they really didn’t care for their homeland government either. I chimed in and said I wasn’t a big fan of our over-bloated, over-intrusive and all-powerful U.S. government. So, we agreed we like the people of each of the countries, but it was the governments that we all disliked, even our own government.
I read verses like this and have to wonder. I am perplexed.
I see God being removed from our state government houses. I see the nativity scenes at Christmas time not being put up anymore. I see taxes we pay being used in ways that we may not deem appropriate from a Christian point of view.
When Jesus walked the Earth, he questioned authority, especially if the authority figures were in the wrong and their hearts were not in the wrong place.
Maybe that’s what it boils down to…is your heart in the right place?
In the right place to govern?
In the right place to be governed?
I guess that is something we all have to answer to.

Prayer Concern – Lord, bless those in positions of authority to have love in their hearts and those being governed to believe in their decisions.
