The scripture for today is Luke 14:33.
“In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. “
This can be a difficult message to hear, particularly in a modern world where family values take center stage in most of our lives. Today’s verse shows us that Jesus had no interest gathering half-hearted disciples. His goal was to make true disciples who were totally committed to Him.
It is human nature to focus on what we are having to give up or live without our own individual life, certain relationships, and our possessions. Jesus commands us to give up all of these, but what if we shifted our focus from what we are losing to how we could use the resources God has provided us to make the world a better place?
I read recently that God gave us two hands: one to receive and one to give. I think we tend to be excellent at the receiving part. We all want to gather as much wealth, as many friends, and as much stuff as we can, but do we really NEED all of it? What if we were half as good at sharing these resources with those in need? What if we simplified our lives and truly focused on the things that mattered? None of us can fully live up to Jesus’ call, but by His grace, we can commit to Him all that we are and all that we have.
Lord, thank you for the many blessings you have given to me. Help me to rid my life of the many distractions and dedicate my life to serving you. Amen
