September 3, 2020 Daily Devotion

The scripture for today is Psalm 119:33-40, NIV.

33 Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.[a] 34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. 35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. 36 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. 37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.[b] 38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. 39 Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. 40 How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life

When I read these verses, I realized that this could be my daily prayer and following this prayer would lead to a satisfying daily walk with God.

The Psalmist starts by asking for guidance in verse 33. They want to understand God’s laws and purpose so that they can live fulfilled. Verses 34 asks for guidance and verse 35 states the author knows that following God will lead to “delight”. Verses 36 resonated with me because all too often when I set goals, they are not set for the common good but for my good. These verses recognize the way that humans can be short sighted, but God never is. He has his sights set on a better tomorrow for all of us. The challenge for us is to recognize this fact and follow him.

So, as I put these verses together in my mind I am smiling because God reaches out to us here to understand that succumbing to sin is painful and following God’s laws is delightful.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father please help me to understand how to live this day and all days praising and following your ways. Amen.
