The scripture for today is Luke 16:31.
31 He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’
In this lesson, a beggar and a rich man have both died. The beggar goes to Heaven and stands beside Abraham, the rich man goes to suffer torment in Hades. The rich man asks Abraham to send the beggar to visit his brothers to convince them to change their ways to save them from suffering his fate. Abraham’s response is in verse 31.
Abraham is saying that giving these brothers another sign wasn’t going to make them pay attention and start living a godly life. Why bother, they aren’t listening to God.
They’ve ignored the laws handed down to Moses and the visions, lessons and warnings of the prophets. It sounds like they are cold hearted and selfish. They may be enjoying a luxurious life in this world, but they are not going to be rewarded in the next life.
Years ago I saw a bumper sticker that said “He who dies with the most toys wins”. Pretty cynical. Sometime after that I saw another one that had the response - “He who dies with the most toys is still dead”. How true. If we seek to just build up our own selves in this life, where is the joy of sharing and loving others? Life is so much better when it is shared with family and friends and others we encounter.
Dear Lord, open our hearts to Your Word and help us to glorify You in our lives. Let our actions proclaim Your grace and forgiveness of our sins. Help us to help others find their way to You. Amen
