The reading for today is from Romans 8:38-39.
“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
In the years that I have been teaching Confirmation, this verse is one that is selected almost every year by an 8th grader as their favorite verse. I think this is wonderful as this verse is truly amazing.
NOTHING in this world or outside of this world can separate us from God. Period. There are no exceptions, no special clauses, no workarounds. God is fully and always there for us. Jesus has bridged that gap through His loving act of dying on the cross. We are once again reunited with our God.
Yet, too often I hear people set themselves out as an outlier to this promise, this Good News. They clearly see it applies to others but for themselves it is clearly not the case. They have done something too horrible or have been broken down too much to be included in this all-inclusive gathering of God's people unto Himself. As I told one youth, " You are not that special! God's love for all His Children included you. You cannot set yourself outside of His love and promises."
Lord of Life, Help us to see your promises and know that we are fully Yours. Amen
