Today’s Reading is Jeremiah 17:5

Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.

Many people read this verse and others like it and believe that God will curse us if we step outside of His rules. I was raised to believe that, but as I have become more familiar with Scripture, I don’t see a God who is just waiting for us to mess up so He can punish us.

I think this verse points out that when we allow our hearts to be turned away from the LORD, we follow a path of destruction. I believe God is warning us - not threatening us. I think He’s saying you can choose that way if you like but I want you to know that it isn’t going to end well if you turn away from Me and do things your own way.

Lord God Almighty, Designer of all life and willing Father to a broken world of people, we are awe-struck by Your greatness and humbled by Your great mercy and grace, borne of Your immense love. Please keep our hearts turned always toward You that we would not be ensnared by the enemy’s assurance of our own strength. Open our eyes to understand Your complete care for us and our ultimate well-being in Your presence eternally. Amen.
