Today’s Reading is Psalm 133
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
I have 4 children, all grown, who come home for Thanksgiving each year. I don’t mind the work involved in that day’s preparation because of how much I enjoy just sitting back and watching them enjoy each other’s company. I can assure you it wasn’t like that when they were young! Now there is a unity among them caused primarily by the shared Spirit dwelling within each of them, but they also have an early life of shared experiences which has created a bond of love.
It really is good and pleasant when brothers (and sisters) dwell in unity! I wish it happened in the Body of Christ more often.
I heard a sermon on this passage once. Oil was poured over the head of the priest and it ran all the way down his robe. The speaker asked us to imagine the body of the priest as the Body of Christ, the universal Body of believers in Christ. We can never stop being part of the Body but what if the hand decides to stretch out to the side as far from the rest of the Body as possible? When the anointing oil is poured over and runs down the robe, the hand will miss out on the shared experience of that anointing.
How much better it is to be together in unity, entire Body under the freshly outpoured Spirit of anointing, hands working together in unity in priestly service to God. Meeting together, praying for one another, expressing the life and love of God.
Divine Administrator of Heaven and Earth, Father God, Savior Jesus, Spirit of Life, Head of the Body of which we are a part, You and only You are worthy of all our praise. You are the authority under which we live and operate. Pour out Your Spirit on us as we dwell together in You and in the unity that only exists in the Church. Amen.
Prayer Concern: Unified hearts and minds of God’s people on this planet.
