The reading for today is Genesis 6:10 KJV
"And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth."
After reading this, you might think, "And...?" "Is this just another birth announcement, or is there more to this story?"
There IS more --- much more!
The lineage of Noah, his three sons and their wives, is amazing. After the flood, in Chapter 9 we read, "And God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." And they did! (Since Noah and his sons lived for hundreds of years, there was a lot of time to establish large families.) In Chapter 10, the chapter of the "begats," we learn that Ham begat Cush who begat Nimrod, who established Babel, from where all the people dispersed, creating many nations.
We now have the Table of Nations, which deals with the ethnological (persons and families) and the ethnographical (nations or tribes) aspects of the beginnings of humanity. Very extensive and worth looking up.
The Bible tells us all modern mankind descend from Shem, Ham and Japheth. Consider the implications of that. Do we think of every other person on this earth as a relative of ours?
Heavenly Father, help us to think of all people as part of our very large family. Help us to love and pray for all your human creations. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
