The scripture for today is Psalm 23, NIV.
A psalm of David
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,
For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
I love this chapter! When I saw this was an alternative chapter for my devotion, I couldn’t resist. These beautiful words have been a balm to my soul in many different circumstances throughout my life. When my mother-in-law was near death, this was what my daughter and I read to her. When my husband died, this chapter was read at his funeral, bringing such comfort. God is so good. He has been there through all of the dark valleys of my life. He has helped me walk through those dark valleys and get to the other side. When I am worried or stressed, I think of those quiet waters and my soul is refreshed. I know that no matter what trials I go through in my life, God will be there and my heart overflows with thankfulness and love at that certainty. I rejoice in the fact that I will have a place in God’s house when my life here on Earth is done.
Reading this psalm is like a breath of fresh air when life starts to close in. We all would benefit from reading these words when life seems to be too much. Praise the Lord!
