The scripture for today is Psalm 80:7-15, NIV.

7 Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

8 You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. 9 You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land. 10 The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches. 11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea,[a] its shoots as far as the River.[b]

12 Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes? 13 Boars from the forest ravage it, and insects from the fields feed on it. 14 Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine, 15 the root your right hand has planted, the son[c] you have raised up for yourself.

Many times, in our life we will come to a period where we feel we are standing against forces that may overwhelm us. This feeling is not unique to us today. In this Psalm the author feels that they are being assailed and God has forgotten them. When the Israelites were led out of Egypt and God has placed them in Israel there was a common belief that they would live in a land of “milk and honey”. The circumstances that Israel found themselves in when they arrived in Israel was better than the slavery they faced in Egypt but Israel sits in some very rugged and inhospitable geography. There were other people in that land that were displaced by Israel and they didn’t like that. So, it is no wonder that Israel was challenged then, just as it is today.

The good news is that God does not forget us. He loves us and because of that love he helps us by answering our prayers. In these verses the Psalmist prays to be remembered and for God’s help. There should never be any doubt that God is with us and that he will help us when we call out. Our challenge is that God’s solution may be different then the solution we are hoping for.

Many times in my life, as I have fretted over a dilemma and prayed for the solution I wanted, God provided a solution that was not what I asked for. As I look back on those solutions, I have marveled at how much God’s solution helped me grow. So, I thank God every day for the help I receive even when it doesn’t match my desires because God doesn’t make mistakes.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father please accept our praise for the love you shower on us. Please help us to grow in your ways. Amen
