The reading for today is 1Titus 2:7-8 11-15, NIV.
“In everything, set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Paul is trying to show Titus how to set a good example to other Christians. Integrity, we could use a lot of today that is for sure. Soundness of speech, this as well. Then lastly seriousness. Wow this is age old advice we can use today.
Maybe we the people, should heed these words today. None of us want to be ashamed by others, but we don't always use the guidelines that Paul is writing about either. Next time you have a good conversation with someone you mentor, you should try integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech. And don't use Twitter.
Also, in your daily conversations, use the same principles. I work the reception desk at a nursing home. Normally it is very straightforward, but with the Covid scare it has been very important to use integrity, seriousness, and soundness in my speech. People have not been able to see their loved ones, the residents need the stimulation of family and everyone gets frightened, then upset. Just a few kind words can get them calm. I had a call from a son the other night, his mother had called him and told him she was lost. He was very upset. I called the appropriate floor and spoke to the nurse then transferred the call. She was in her room and using her own phone. All was well, even though his mother may not recognize her room as her home now.
Take time with the elderly and be patient with the upset.
Lord, teach us patience, integrity, and soundness of speech. Help us to be calm when others are upset. Amen
