The scripture for today is Psalm 1, KJV.

1 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."

This psalm covers everything! It serves as an introduction and is called a Psalm of Wisdom. It is a synopsis of dos and don'ts and gives us

GOD -- Good Orderly Direction. It teaches us how to avoid being unhappy. It is a psalm of comparisons. Don't hang out with the ungodly, sinners, nor scorners. (Choose your companions wisely.) Don't be like a tree that grows wild in dry soil and is weak and withers away. Don't be one from whom blessings are withheld. Do delight in and follow God's laws, and meditate upon them. Do be like a tree deliberately planted near living waters, so you will bear good fruit and your roots will run deep. Do be one who is blessed, by avoiding the traps of the ungodly. Do prosper. Don't be one who perishes.

It's so easy to get caught up in traps today, because of what's on television and social media, and the obvious lack of morality. So much that can be evil is available to us every day. It's literally at our fingertips. Have you thought about what things tempt you that might not be good or healthy for you? I am temptable, regrettably, and find I have to fight against temptation more than I'd like to admit, especially when it comes to food!

You can learn more of the postures - walk, stand and sit, and how they apply if you look at some of the commentaries on this psalm. There's a huge amount that's been written. It's much more involved than it seems. I thought I understood it, until I started digging!

Ever-present Lord, help us to walk with you and not with those who are ungodly. Help us to stand straight with righteous people rather than standing with sinners. Help us to boldly express our beliefs and our loyalty to you, and not be tempted to remain voiceless in the presence of those who scorn you. In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
