Today’s reading is Philippians 2:14-18 RcV
Do all things without murmurings and reasonings that you may be blameless and guileless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as luminaries in the world, holding forth the Word of Life, so that I may have a boast in the day of Christ that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and I rejoice together with you all. And in like manner you also rejoice, and you rejoice together with me.
I love that this version uses the word “luminaries”. It makes me think of those little paper bags with candles inside that light up your walkway when you’re having a party or even the little paper things that lift off and float away from the heat of a candle inside them. The KJV translates “lights” and it comes from a Greek word that comes closest to meaning “stars.” All of those paint a picture for me of lights shining in the darkness.
Rather than murmuring and reasoning like the crooked and perverted world around us, we should look so different that we are like a shining light in the darkness.
One of my favorite verses in the Old Testament is Daniel 12:3, “And they that be wise will shine as the brightness of the heavens, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.”
May our testimony for Him be so bright that it stands out in stark contrast to a world of darkness and points others always in His direction.
Lord, I want to be a light for You. I want to shine like the stars. Please help me to be willing to pour my life out like a drink offering as Paul did. It may be in large ways but I think it starts in small ways – like abstaining from murmuring and reasoning. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. Amen.
