The scripture for today is 1Peter 5:1-5.
To the Elders and the Flock
1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
This passage is part of a letter written by Peter and passed through the churches that were growing up in Turkey. The Christians were being persecuted by the Romans during this period as the Roman empire started to look for scapegoats for a great fire that burned Rome in 64AD. So, the times were perilous, and Peter was concerned that Christian leaders could get in the way of Christ’s message by being self-centered.
Peter’s message also rings true today. If we, as leaders or followers of Christ, focus on ourselves then the church serves no purpose. Peter tells us that the way to God’s heart is to honor him daily in our lives by helping our brothers and sisters in their daily lives. If we treat others with respect, then we will grow the flock and move God’s kingdom on earth forward by looking after each other. Let’s rise daily to this challenge.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father help us see those around us who need help. Bless our efforts move us forward in your ways. Amen.
