The reading for today is Psalm 61:5
For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
I grew up going to church every Sunday. I don’t ever remember a time in my life that wasn’t influenced by having a church family. I am so grateful for the heritage God gave me through my mom who took me to church every Sunday even though it was her only day off work in a factory.
When I was growing up, I only knew of 2 kinds of people – those who went to church and those who didn’t. I thought my family were all church people. Even my dad went twice a year. I was surprised once while visiting my grandpa to have him ask why I was wasting my time with “all that stuff.” When I asked my mom about it, she explained that her parents never attended church, but her mom thought it would look good to the neighbors if her kids went to church. And so, it was that my unbelieving grandparents gave my mom (and thus, me) a heritage of church involvement.
That heritage doesn’t just spread in one direction. Late in life, my grandmother began to attend church with her children.
Lord, thank You for Your far-reaching love that finds us in so many ways! Keep us faithfully providing a heritage of faith to all those You place in our lives. Amen.
