The scripture for today is Luke 17:19 (NIV).
19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
In this situation, ten lepers had approached Jesus and asked Him to heal them. Jesus immediately sends them to show themselves to the priests to confirm their healing, and in route they are in fact made clean. Nine of them keep walking, but one of them is so overtaken by emotion that he stops in his tracks and turns around to head back to where Jesus was. He is not content on simply taking the gift. Going to the Temple can wait. Reuniting with his family can wait. Religious observance can wait. But thanking Jesus cannot wait! His spiritual obligation took precedence over all other obligations. Not only does he want to thank Jesus, but he wanted to give himself to Jesus. This verse is Jesus’ response to him,
Ten lepers made physically whole, but only one made spiritually whole. What about the other nine? In the next verses, Jesus asks about where they are. Jesus noticed that the nine ignored Him and didn’t take the time to come back to thank Him for this miraculous gift of healing.
How often do we take God’s healing, or God’s grace for granted? We have faith that God can heal us physically and spiritually, but we often forget to praise and thank God for His amazing gifts. We certainly don’t deserve these gifts! But God certainly deserves our thanks and praise!!!
LORD, we are grateful for Your salvation in every way. Your grace toward us makes us stop and say, from the bottom of our hearts, ‘Thank You, Lord!'”
