The scripture reading for today is taken from John 5: 19-40
“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the father loves the Son and shows Him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgement to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.’”
Jesus is referencing His power and divinity in these passages above. At another point in the chapter, He also had referenced John the Baptist and past scriptures of God’s words which named Him as the Son of God. It is hard to understand how his audience could stand in His presence, hearing these words and references, and still remain so -dense-. Why did all of these listeners not fall to their faces before Him?
I wonder if these people, and people in general, get blinded to His power because admission would entail admitting their hopeless state and need for a savior? It is easier to keep chasing legalism because it provides a sense of control. Grace involves a complete reversal. It’s hard to let go and give the “wheel” over to God... but necessary for reaching His destination.
