The reading is from Zechariah 2:1-5
“I looked up and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. Then I asked, “Where are you going?” He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.” Then the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him, and said to him, “Run, say to that young man: Jerusalem shall be inhabited like villages without walls, because of the multitude of people and animals in it. For I will be a wall of fire all around it, says the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.”
Sometimes I think we as people are too concerned with defining everything. We are constantly having to gauge things. How much do I make? How many likes did my picture get? How much is that car he drives? How many people agree with my viewpoint? We seek comfort within knowing EXACTLY what the numbers are. Only if we have these numbers can we truly know if something is good or bad, right or wrong, worthy or unworthy.
But this is not the case with God. God sends Zechariah an angel to remind him of the case. The city (God's kingdom) is too big to be measure by something so inadequate as a measuring stick (whatever stick we may be trying to use). God says just let it be at it is. He reminds His People that GOD will define the borders and within those borders the only thing that is truly important is His presence in that place.
So, stop worrying about how things stack up to each other. Find the presence of God in all things and be comforted in His love and grace there.
Lord, Help us to be focused on You and You alone. Amen.
