The reading today is John 11:35,36.
35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
Most are familiar with the story of Lazarus. The Bible doesn't give us any details as to why Jesus suddenly broke down and wept. Hard to understand when He was the allmighty, all-knowing God incarnate. Natural for us to wonder. I've heard several explanations for why Jesus wept. Maybe they are all correct.
Just looking at these two verses, my take away is this:
How many times has Jesus wept over me?
How many times have I strayed, from His light into the darkness of a sinful world?
He wants me back with Him so badly, he sheds tears.
"See how He loves her"
If I'm honest, this is the kind of love I crave. Love that doesn't care how I look or how brave or smart or funny I am. For better or worse. In sickness, in health. In wealth, poverty, joy, sorrow. His love never changes. (And now, the analogy of Christ as bridegroom to the church becomes more clear.) He always, always wants me near! He loves me! He loves all of us, because He made us. We are His. He died on the cross, paying our ransom, that we could always be with Him.
"See how he loves us."
Dear Lord Jesus, Thank you for your unending love. Thanks for this scripture, and the many reminders of your love that you send me. Thanks for calling me back, time after time. Forgive me when I stray, teach me to do better and inspire me to pass your love on to others. Amen.
