When… Jesus was tempted
“Jesus answered them, ‘It is written…’” Luke 4:4
“Jesus answered him, ‘It is written…’” Luke 4:8
Jesus was hungry and being tempted to make His own bread out of the stones lying around in the Judean wilderness. “Take care of Your own self. Use Your powers for You.”
Jesus was shown the glory of the nations and offered the power and the authority over it all if only He would bow down to the devil. “Worship me!”
Jesus’s responses, when He was tempted, were to lean on the Word of God. The Word was His resource, strength and guide. “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word proceeding from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4; Luke 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3) “Worship the Lord, your God, and serve only Him.” (Luke 4:8; Matthew 4:10; Deuteronomy 6:13)
When… Jesus was tempted His foundation and fortress was the Word. I think it’s interesting that Jesus, the Word of God in the flesh (John 1:14) used the Word of God for His response. That Word, inspired by the Spirit and written down for all God’s people, is our strength in challenging times. We might say Jesus used His own Word as resource and strength. No wonder the devil couldn’t twist the Word against Jesus!
When… We are tempted we can turn to the Word and promise of God. But even before we find ourselves in times of struggle and temptation it is a good idea to dwell in that Word!
