The scripture for today is Philippians 1 27-30.
“Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well—since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.”
Always do the right thing all the time even if no one is looking. I am not sure the first time I heard that expression or how it was presented but I understood how important it is always to try to strive to do the right, moral, thing no matter what the circumstances. This is what Paul and Timothy are telling us in this passage. We are to be true to the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, be ready with others and be equipped with the gospel of Christ, no matter what events or situations arise.
God has given us his Son and we are very privileged to have received this precious gift from our Heavenly Father. How fortunate we are to have been in a place and time when we are able to worship freely and without fear of arrest and death for our beliefs. We do not have to suffer for our faith, however in this passage, there is implication that the suffering for our faith is also a privilege. Struggle is described and is candidly referred to in the past and the present.
What are struggles? Is it an awe of the Living God, or a struggle of faith? Could our questions about life in Christ and the troubles of the world really live side by side? Do we have more questions than answers and yearn for being worthy of the gift of Christ to us? Do we worry about living a life falling short of doing the right thing at the right tine all the time?
Standing strong in the faith will continue with God’s help and loving guidance. Struggles of the past, present, and the future will continue. Salvation comes with the faith in the gospel.
Let us pray: Dear God, Help us to stand strong in our faith, and not be tempted by our opponents. Bring your loving guidance as we deal with memories of past struggles, deal with present ones and give us skills to deal with the struggles that lie ahead. Amen.
Prayer Concern: Please pray for the children of the world as they need help them with their struggles and give them faith in God. May they learn that doing the right thing all the time is the best path in life.
