When… Jesus was tempted
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness where for 40 days He was tempted by the devil.” Luke 4:1 – 2
When… Jesus was baptized the Spirit of God descended on Him, like a dove. He heard the confirmation of His identity in the Father’s voice, “You are My Son, the Beloved.” Filled with that confirmation and identity and “Spirit” Jesus stepped into the real world. That “real world” felt more like “temptation Island.” But Jesus was not without resource for those 40 days and 40 nights. Jesus entered that time with everything He needed. He had the Father’s voice in His ears. He had the strength of an unbroken relationship dependent on the promise. He was one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Even while He was hungry and tempted. He was still whole and holy!
At our baptism:
+ We have been named children of a loving and grace – full God.
+ We have been claimed. “You are Mine,” says the Lord.
+ We have been commissioned and sent. “Go, make disciples.”
+ We have received the promise, “I am with you always.”
When… Jesus was tempted, he was fully resourced.
When… we are tempted, do we feel alone? Isolated? Partial? Pressured? Abandoned?
We are not.
