When...You are Ashamed
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am not worthy to be called your son…” Luke 15:21
“But the Father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly, bring out a robe, the best one, and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet… for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’” Luke 15:22, 24
Jesus’ parable of Grace never gets old. The son of flagrant sin, who had worn himself out in self-centered living, who had lost himself in shame and dis-grace, that was the son who was restored by the Father. He was found. He was alive again because his Father took him back and restored their relationship completely. He was alive again because his Father spoke the words of Grace, “This son of mine.”
I have made myself unworthy more often than I care to admit. But God looks through that unworthiness to see me as “Beloved.” God sees the forgiven me. God sees the always loved me. This is a testament to the Grace of God. That’s why Jesus came.
When we have made a mess out of our lives, God restores us and reshapes us and reminds us of who we really are. That’s why Jesus came.
Jesus took on Himself our guilt and shame to clothe us in a new robe called salvation.
“This son of Mine, this daughter of Mine,” says the LORD. That’s us! That’s you and me. Who are you going to listen to?
