The scripture reading for today is Luke 1:26-38

“...The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called The Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.’ ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her…”

Mary faithfully received an overwhelming and seemingly impossible message: she would bear the Son of God! She accepted this miracle willingly and acquiesced to God’s plan. In the same way, Elizabeth was blessed with an impossible pregnancy in her old age. In both of these cases, God enlarged them to possess their callings. The faith of these two women was miraculous.

The Holy Spirit knocks at the door of every person’s heart requesting entrance, and it is every person’s job to allow Him inside, both for salvation and for the procurement of His day to day kingdom on this earth. As passages in Hebrews 7:10-14 make clear, the Holy Spirit within us will live out His perfect plan as we bow down and allow Him to work through us.

When God asks for things from us which seem burdensome, He is often planning to grow us to manage them and to bring beauty out of the request. While Mary’s calling had a perfect end in sight, sometimes it is hard for us to know where our callings will lead.

Be encouraged that God is working in our circumstances today. Amen.
