When… Jesus was questioned
“So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful and He will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing, He will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
Look into the mirror carefully. See yourself as you are. Be honest. When I look I see someone who tries hard sometimes and who at other times doesn’t try hard enough, if at all. That’s being honest with myself. So, what I see in the mirror is someone who, when he is standing, stands with a definite wobble. I see someone who has also fallen and barely gets up.
But the mirror isn’t the only place we look at ourselves. Walk by the Baptismal font sometime and take a deep look in that water. Do you see your reflection there as well?
“God is faithful,” says St. Paul. And its true. When you look into the waters of Baptism you will see the reflection of God’s promise. Those who are baptized in Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death and resurrection. So just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too may have new life. (Romans 6) “God has provided a way out.” So that even more than enduring the honest look and the testing that life can bring, we will live. We do live, honestly, repentantly and joyfully.
The testing of life is like the refining of metal. The testing is meant to melt away the impurities in order to bring forth the better, the stronger, the even more beautiful polished metal. And when you are heating and testing metal it is tempered by cool water. So are we.
“Come to the water, all you who are thirsty.” Isaiah 55
“Come to Me, all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11
Come to Him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight” 1 Peter 2
When you look at yourself in the mirror or in the water, do you see the face of Jesus next to you, behind you, around you? God provides the way.
