March 2, 2021 Daily Devotion

The scripture reading for today is Hebrews 11: 17 – 19, ESV.

“By faith, Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.”

In my wildest dreams, I cannot imagine having enough faith to do what Isaac was willing to do. I have been on this faith journey for a while, and I know that I can still need to pray that my faith would increase. I still want for more faith.

Here is a song about believing in more than what our eyes see. It is by Rich Mullins. It was contemporary Christian a long time ago. That’s why I love hymns so much; they are more timeless. I think this song should be! It’s called “If I stand.”

There's more that rises in the morning than the sun

And more that shines in the night than just the moon

It's more than just this fire here that keeps me warm

In a shelter that is larger than this room

And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments

And a music higher than the songs that I can sing

The stuff of Earth competes for the allegiance

I owe only to the Giver of all good things

So, if I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through

And if I can't let me fall on the grace that first brought me to

You And if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs

And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home

There's more that dances on the prairies than the wind

More that pulses in the ocean than the tide

There's a love that is fiercer than the love between friends

More gentle than a mother's when her baby's at her side

And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments

And a music higher than the songs that I can sing

The stuff of Earth competes for the allegiance

I owe only to the Giver of all good things

So, if I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through

And if I can't let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You

And if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs

And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home

This song along with today’s scripture encourage me to pray to increase my own faith. But I also find the song helpful when searching for words to spur someone to start his or her own faith journey. When I look at something beautiful, it is easier for me to believe that it was orchestrated by an almighty God than it is to believe it’s there by happenstance. I believe that deep down in our human hearts, we are wired, all of us, to seek and to know this truth.

I pray that these beautiful words by Rich Mullins will encourage you today.

Today’s prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, as I learn in Mark 9:24: “I believe, please help my unbelief!”

Peace,
