The reading for today is Acts 16:35-40
37 But Paul said to them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now secretly they are thrusting us out? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out.
I attended and worked at a private school my senior year of high school. The school staff motto was, “Praise in public, reprimand in private.” It seems the opposite was done here. The condemnation and punishment were very public even though they were unjust. Then the release was done quietly without even an apology.
In my weekly small group, we have been discussing discernment and the proper time for words or action. I still have a lot to learn in that regard. I don’t think I could be as bold as Paul. I would probably just have been grateful to be released from prison.
I’m glad the Apostle Paul had the discernment to know that this was the time and the place to be bold. I pray for continued transformation and maturity and that I would grow in discernment to know when and how to best speak up and out.
Lord, it’s frustrating and sometimes scary to watch how the world is changing around us. Rather than being conformed to our culture, help us to be agents of change. God, grant that we would be transformed into expressions of Your glory and examples of Your grace. Amen.
