When… Jesus was in danger
“They said to Jesus, ‘Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill You.’ He said to them, ‘Go tell that old fox for Me, listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish My work.’”
When... Jesus was in danger, He knew His way. Herod was a powerful, abusive, highly threatened, caricature of a leader. When Jesus met Herod in the trial scene of His passion Jesus’ presence overwhelmed this petty tyrant. All Herod could do was ask for a miracle or two. Herod heaped ridicule on Jesus, then sent Him back to Pilate. Herod could not stand in the way of Jesus’ great Mission for the world, for all humanity. He was a worn-out old fox, nothing more.
When… they brought the threat of Herod to Jesus He remained focused on His Mission. He knew His purpose. He kept His eyes on the prize of salvation. Salvation, which would proceed from His life and death and resurrection, was the gift He was accomplishing. He made a difference, an eternal difference, in every relationship, every encounter, every conversation. Keeping His focus, Jesus did not give in to fear or the danger posed by Herod’s empty threats. When… Jesus was in danger, He knew His way.
Can you and I be as certain of our purpose? Do we know deep inside ourselves that we share the same Mission with Him? He has called us and co-missioned us! Can that purpose and mission help us stay focused when danger threatens us? I don’t mean that we should be careless with our well being. But there are threats every day that would silence the Christian. There are pressures all around that would distract us. There are real dangers, but we have a purpose. We have a mission in every relationship, in every conversation, and in every encounter.
When… we feel danger, do we know our way?
He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (John 14:16)
