When… You are afraid
“Do not be afraid, Abram, I Am your shield… Look toward the heavens and count the stars, if you’re able to count them… The Lord said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ And Abram believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it as righteousness.” Genesis 15:1, 5 – 6
Abram was afraid of what the future held. Or better yet, what the future might not hold. For him and Sarai to be without a child, a descendent, was actually to have no future. They would be dead and gone. Abram had trusted God this far but even with the victories and the blessings there was something missing. And that something meant there was no future.
What scares you about the future? What part of that unknown tomorrow keep you awake at night? I’m sure it’s a little different for everyone and I’m sure in some ways it’s the same.
Fear and anxiety rob us of effectiveness. Fear and anxiety steal away our joy. Fear and anxiety costs us energy which might be used more productively.
“Do not be afraid… I Am your shield.” The Lord invites us to put our hope and our trust in His presence and promise to be in our future. It may not be a guarantee that our dreams will come true, but God’s promises will!
+ “I Am with you always.” Matthew 28:20
+ “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Psalm 23
+ “Nothing will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:39
What God intends for us (righteousness) is for us to trust in the promise and to live our lives into the future without fear.
