June 28, 2020 Daily Devotion

The reading for today is Jeremiah 28: 5 – 9.

“Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.’”

Please look at that last sentence, v.9, again. What a mouthful! Sadly, this is the third devotion I have written during the Pandemic. We listen and search for the voice of truth in the midst of this mess. Many respected members of society prophecy tragedy. Others have prophesied peace and comfort. In both instances, many who tried to make predictions were wrong.

We look desperately for God’s healing hand and we listen for His voice above the clamor of resounding gongs. This verse in Jeremiah gives our ears some tuning. We may not recognize it until we gain that now infamous and profound “2020 hindsight,” but those who lay out true paths for peace (more so than those who forecast disaster), according to Jeremiah, are those “truly sent by God.”

Most of us aren’t capable of being true prophesiers of peace, but we can ALL be propagators of the same! We can be truly tolerant and respectful of each other’s handling of the situation. We can search for need and give as we are able. We can witness as to where the only true peace is begotten. We can be prayer warriors. Etc., etc.!!

Do we need a song? I think we always need a song. Sing this 1955 classic by Jill Jackson-Miller and Sy Miller with me in spirit if you will.

Let there be peace on earth

And let it begin with ME

Let there be peace on earth

The peace that was meant to be

As God as our Father

Brothers (and sisters!) all are we

Let me walk with my (siblings)

In perfect harmony

Let peace begin with ME

Let this be the moment now

With every step I take

Let this be my solemn vow

To take each moment and live each moment

In peace eternally

Let there be peace on earth

And let it begin with ME!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that we never walk alone. Please bless those who feel isolated with extra infilling of the Holy Spirit. We know that when Jesus is present, loneliness, in time, will fade. Therein lies the path to true peace. Help our lives to be witnesses of that fact.

Prayer Concern: those who suffer without family present and also those who have family members who died devoid of the comfort of loved ones surrounding them. Grant them all true peace.
