The scripture for today is 2Thessalonians 2:13 - 3:5.
13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as first fruits[a] to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[b] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
Request for Prayer
3 As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
2 Thessalonians was a letter written by Paul to the young church in Thessalonica. These verses are filled with hope, promise and words of caution. Paul understands that life is hard especially when your faith is challenged by worldly matters and it is at those times that the evil one will attack you.
So, Paul gives the Christian community good advice. In the first verses he reaffirms that they were chosen by God and sent help in the form of the Holy Spirit. The statement that the Thessalonians were chosen, shown the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ and sent help with their day to day struggles by providing the Holy Spirit had to have given them confidence in their life. Paul then asks them to pray that many others will hear the good news and turn their lives to Christ.
So today as we are faced with the current Pandemic and the fear and uncertainty that that brings to our world, let us remember that we were chosen by God, given the promise of resurrection and help from the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Jesus came to save us, and he will not let anything, including Satan, get in the way of his love for us. Let us proclaim this good news through our words and actions so that our world gets a little brighter in these seemingly dark times.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father thank-you for choosing us to be part of your plan for the world today. Help us to show others that you are the way to eternal life. Amen.
