The scripture reading for today: Luke 10:21

“At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, LORD of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”

Joy is something we have been missing in the world. We have been overwhelmed by disease and divisiveness. Everywhere you look someone has an opinion or knows the solution to all our problems. There are people suffering and with hatred in their hearts and to make matters worse, many of us have been alone more than ever. Joy is a divine gift from God, but Jesus reminds us that we must have humble hearts to see it.

Life is so much simpler as a child. You can find joy in the smallest things and you just want to be friends with everyone. You don’t judge anyone or have any prejudice; you are just happy when someone wants to play or brings you a treat. Jesus chose to reveal himself to the disciples because they came to him like children, with humble hearts and anxious to hear what he had to say.

How about you? How will you come before God? Do you think you are so wise that you have no need to be given anything? Or do you know your need? Will you come before God as a little child with an open heart and open mind?

Despite all the evil and destruction in this world, there are constant reminders of God’s love for us. We simply need to humble our hearts, quiet our minds, and take the opportunity to see it. This spring I had the opportunity to witness a foal being born at our farm. It was amazing to see this miracle take place. God has such an amazing plan that allowed this beautiful baby horse to come into this world without any human interference. I will never forget right after she was born my mom smiling and saying, “God is good!” My mom was able to feel the pure joy of that moment and because of her, I also felt God in that place. Allow yourself today to find the joy. Even if it is something small and share it with those around you. Let others know that the Holy Spirit is still working through us to spread God’s love in this world.

Lord, I know that I do not have all the answers. Send your Holy Spirit to quiet my heart and mind and allow me to experience the joy you have brought into my life. Amen
