The scripture reading today is John 20:14 (NRSV).
“When [Mary Magdalene] had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. “
Happy Mary Magdalene Day! (July 22) – Second Sight in the Garden
Yesterday we heard the familiar tale of Martha and Mary of Bethany—how Martha almost missed out on Jesus: But Martha was distracted by her many tasks (Luke 10:40). On Easter evening, the disciple Thomas missed out on seeing what Mary Magdalene had seen that morning. In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, Jesus tells a parable about the ‘goats at His left hand’ who totally missed seeing Jesus in hunger, thirst, nakedness, illness or prison.
Supposing [Jesus] to be the gardener, Mary Magdalene said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher) (20:15-16).
Next time you see a gardener, take a second look. The Teacher is still teaching.
Almighty God, Your Son first entrusted the apostle Mary Magdalene with the joyful news of His resurrection. Following the example of her witness, may we proclaim Christ as our living Lord, and one day see Him in glory, for He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
