The reading for today is Leviticus 19:2 (NIV).
2 “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’
In this passage, God is speaking to Moses and asking him to remind all the congregation of the children of Israel to live in a holy manner. He further instructs them to turn away from idols and keep “My” Sabbath. This reminds me of how my parents admonished me as a child and set up rules to guide me so that I could not only be safe, but hopefully develop into a faith-filled, humble, compassionate, and responsible adult. Like most young adults, I didn’t always listen, but I surely knew better. But knowing the expectations, does not always curb the willful desire to do as we’d like.
The children of Israel continually needed to be reminded to follow God’s commands and live as God’s chosen people. Yet, they often chose to worship idols and to live in wickedness. The Good News is that God welcomes our return “And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:7 As we find ourselves off the true path, it is through God’s gracious love and forgiveness that we can be pardoned and welcomed into His presences as a treasured child of God. God is waiting for our return to His loving arms, with mercy and forgiveness.
Remind me to center my life on You and follow Your word as my guide.
