The scripture reading for today is Psalm 119: 161-168
“Rulers persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at your word. I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil. I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. I wait for your salvation,
O Lord, and I follow your commands. I obey your statutes, for I love them greatly. I obey your precepts and your statutes, for all my ways are known to you.”
This psalm starts out by pointing out the persecution that was placed on the believers, and the falsehood that was prevalent. It quickly moves to the great love the writer has for the law. Seven times a day he praised the Lord. Seven was the number that signified completeness, so everyday he would completely worship the Lord.
Great peace have they who love the law means they will have complete security and well-being. Again, we read of how all is complete for the Lord and with the Lord.
Because He knows all of the psalmist’s ways, he will obey the precepts and statutes.
This poetic statement is an expression of total commitment and love for the Lord and the law. It is an overflow of praise.
Dear Lord, help us to be as diligent as the psalmists in our expressions of love and help us to follow the commandments to love our Lord with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen
