The scripture for today is 1 Kings 2:1-4, NIV.
When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
“I am about to go the way of all the earth, he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’
I can picture David talking to his son, Solomon, from his death bed. He had already made Solomon his successor but wanted to give him just a few more pieces of advice before he passed on. David warned Solomon that he must be a man and be brave. There was a lot of turmoil at this time and David knew that Solomon would need to be brave and strong to deal with the issues he had left him. He further warned him that he must follow the Law of Moses if the throne of Israel were to remain in the house of David. Unfortunately, none of the kings in the line followed the laws that David charged them with.
Looking back over his life, David knew he was a flawed man, but he understood the importance of following the teachings of God. We are all flawed but thank God, He sent us the final King of Israel to live and die for us and therefore our flaws are covered, and our sins are forgiven. Should we still follow the Word, even though we are forgiven? Of course! If we are truly sons and daughters of Christ, we want to spread His word and live a life that brings honor to His name.
Dear Lord, we know we are sinners and do not deserve all that you give us on a daily basis. We thank and praise you Lord for sending your son to die on the cross so that our sins are forgiven. Amen
