The Reading for today is Psalm 29.

1Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.

3The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over the mighty waters. 4The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. 8The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; in his temple all say, “Glory!”

10The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Psalm 29 is also called the Hymn to the God of the storm. The initial verses are a call to worship, then it moves to describe a thunderstorm. These waters are from the Mediterranean Sea. The strength of the Lord is breaking the massive cedars of Lebanon. The flames of fire talk about the lightning of the storm. All of these verses speak of the power of the Lord through the storm. The ending continues with the strength and the Peace that the Lord brings to His people.

2020 has been a year of tumult and massive upheavals analogous to a mighty storm, similar to powerful storms that move through this area often in the spring and the fall when there are dramatic temperature changes in one day. Such powerful forces of the Lord resolve in Peace, the Peace that passes all understanding. The Lord is King forever.

In the storms of our life, the Lord brings us Peace. This calms the worse possible of the human storms that we encounter. We need to trust that the Lord’s Peace will come. In the middle of the storms, it is difficult to trust and to wait. His Peace will come and the Lord our God will bless his people.

Dear Lord, We pray that we feel your presence in our life of storms. We desire your great Peace and your strength to weather any storm that is in our paths. With you as our Lord we will be blessed. Amen.
