The scripture reading for today is Genesis 28:16-17 New International Version (NIV).

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob reached the place that had been called Luz at the end of a day and he laid down and slept. During his sleep he had a dream that there was a stairway to heaven that started at this place. When he awakened from the night and his dream, he was in awe because he had found the “house of God” and he thought that this must be the “gate of heaven”. I can’t imagine the excitement, joy and the elation of this discovery.

As I contemplated this verse, I realized that everyday we can find the stairway to heaven if we believe that Christ died for our sins. We can experience the same excitement, joy and elation that Jacob experienced by understanding that gift that God has given us.

So, as we start this new and wonderful year let us realize that God is our father, Christ is our savior and the Holy Spirit is with us today and every day to help us navigate our journey through life.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father as we enter this year, we give you thanks for our lives, our families, our church and the many blessing you have created in our lives. Help us to tell you as we go through our years and understand your love. Amen
