The scripture reading for today is Philippians 2: 12-18.

“Keep on working with fear and trembling to complete your salvation, because God is always at work in you to make you willing and able to obey his own purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may be innocent and pure as God’s perfect children, who live in a world of corrupt and sinful people. You must shine among them like stars lightening up the sky.”

Paul is writing to the church in Philippi while in prison in Rome. He wanted to encourage them to keep on living a life of humble attitude like Jesus. They had accepted the gift of salvation from God, and Paul wanted to make sure they continue being dependent on God.

This verse about working out your salvation always confused me. Salvation is a free gift, nothing we do to earn it. We are responsible for accepting this free gift from God, but then living our lives in gratitude and service to God for all He has done for us. We live in a fallen world. God calls us to be a shining light to those around us. We do this by helping out people in need, showing love to those around us, and living a humble life like Jesus.

Heavenly Father, show us your purpose for what you have called us to do. Open our eyes to the world around us, and the way we can serve you.
