The reading for today is Psalm 46, (selected verses).
God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depth, even if the seas roar and rage and the hills are shaken by the violence.
The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Come see what the Lord has done. See what amazing things he has done on earth.
Be still and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme over the world.
David wrote this Psalm after his victory over his enemies in thanks to God for His protection and provisions during hard times. Martin Luther loved this Psalm. He based A Mighty Fortress is our God on the words of this Psalm. When Luther was discouraged, he would say “let’s sing Psalm 46”.
David encourage us to know where our help comes from and that God is always there for us in times of trouble. In the worst case scenario, the earth is destroyed, mountains fall into the ocean and the hills are shaken by violence, we are not to be afraid because we have the promise that God is with us.
2020 held very trying times for our country and the world. We don’t know what 2021 will bring. What we do know is that God is in control. He tell us to be still, acknowledge Him for what He is doing, step back and let God be God. We don’t need to do God’s job for Him, He’s got this. He is working in His time and His way. It’s our job to trust Him.
Gracious Father, We thank you for being our shelter and strength. We can always depend on you to be there in troubled times for us. Give us your peace no matter what situations we are facing, knowing that you are in control.
