The scripture reading for today is Hebrews 10:1-4, KJV
"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins."
Verses 1-3 speak of the custom of blood offerings to remove sin. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, it was the expectation that the people adhering to the law would make this offering and be cleansed. But did they expect to be cleansed for that day only, or for the entire year, or for eternity? If they were totally convinced, they were now pure, would they have returned?
We know that the blood of bulls and goats cannot remove sin. We also know the blood of Christ has made it possible to do exactly that! Only by willingly asking for absolution, with a contrite heart and expecting not to repeat our sins, can we be forgiven. We are blessed by knowing Jesus shed his blood in order that we could be saved.
We all need forgiveness. Praise to the Lord that we know exactly how we can receive it! Repent and rejoice!
Most Gracious Lord, you gave us the greatest gift of all -- your son, Jesus the Christ. We thank you and bless you for this gift and pray that we remember all the sacrifices made for us.
